Smith & Wesson Buys Savage Arms. What Does That Mean for Gun Owners?

Well, this is some pretty big news in the firearms industry!

On October 21, 2026, Smith & Wesson officially announced its acquisition of Savage Arms in a deal valued at approximately $160 million.

If you've spent much time around firearms, you know these are two pretty big names. Smith & Wesson is best known for its handguns and revolvers, while Savage has built a strong reputation for accurate, affordable hunting rifles, rimfires, and shotguns.

Bringing these two American manufacturers together could make for a pretty interesting combination!

Why the Deal Matters

Smith & Wesson says the acquisition will help expand its presence in the hunting market, improve manufacturing efficiency, and create opportunities for new products.

And it makes sense. Rather than building an entirely new hunting rifle lineup, Smith & Wesson now has an established brand with more than 130 years of history behind it.

For those of us who love firearms, we're especially interested in seeing what these companies might come up with together. Could we see some exciting new products? Better availability? Maybe even some competitive pricing? All possibilities, but nothing confirmed just yet.

What About Current Savage Owners?

Here's the good news: there have been no announced changes to Savage's existing product lineup, warranties, or pricing as a result of the acquisition.

If you own a Savage rifle, there's no reason to be concerned based on today's announcement. There's been no indication that popular models like the Savage 110 or AXIS are being discontinued because of the deal.

Existing owners should continue following Savage's published warranty and service procedures unless the manufacturer announces otherwise.

Of course, things could change as the companies begin working together, and we'll be keeping an eye on that.

What Does It Mean for Gun Shops?

That's something we're curious about ourselves!

Combining two major manufacturers could eventually mean changes to dealer programs, distribution, pricing, or product availability.

We're hopeful it means better access to inventory, more product options, and continued support for independent gun shops like ours.

One thing we'll be watching closely is how the combined company treats smaller dealers. Keeping the playing field competitive between local gun shops and the big national retailers is important to us.

Our Thoughts

Overall, we're pretty excited to see where this goes.

Savage has been a staple in the hunting world for generations, and Smith & Wesson certainly knows a thing or two about building firearms. There's a lot of potential here if the two companies put their strengths together.

For now, it's business as usual. There's no need to rush out and buy a Savage because of the acquisition, and no reason to believe your favorite model is going away.

We'll keep following the news and share anything that might impact our customers here in Apalachicola and beyond.

What do you think about Smith & Wesson buying Savage? Are you excited to see what they come up with, or would you rather see Savage stay independent?

We'd love to hear your thoughts!
